The “Mental Health and Chronic Pain Medicinal Cannabis Masterclass” activity has been accredited (Activity no: 246374) by the The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) for the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program in the 2020-22 triennium. Fellow GP members of the RACGP are eligible to claim 40 CPD Accredited points. It is a requirement of the RACGP that members who wish to claim these points provide their RACGP number when applying for this course. Other health professionals may also apply for self-directed CPD point for their particular profession.

About the Educators

Dr. Teresa Towpik has been a General Practitioner in Australia since 1993 and an advocate of medicinal cannabis since the law was amended and cannabis was legalized for medicinal use. In 2016 she founded Medihuanna with the goal to educate medical practitioners to safely treat patients with medicinal cannabis. Since then, she has been studying the therapeutic properties of cannabis, how it works, and the potential applications in General Practice, especially in the management of chronic debilitating pain.

Dr Orit Holtzman is the Chief Medical Officer of Compass Lifestyle Clinics where she practices Functional and Cannabinoid medicine. She holds a Bachelor of Science in biology and psychology from the University of Tel Aviv, a PhD in neuroscience from the university of NSW and an MBBS from the Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney. After coming across Dr Teresa Towpik’s work, she has become passionate about utilising medicinal cannabis as a therapeutic agent and began prescribing cannabis in 2019. She now has more than 400 patients that have been approved for medicinal cannabis for various indications under her care and is an authorised prescriber for multiple conditions. She lives in the beautiful Blue Mountains with her husband and three children.

Workshop Description

This masterclass is intended for medical practitioners with some experience in prescribing cannabinoid-based medicines through the Special Access Scheme, seeking to gain more knowledge in the requirements of becoming an Authorised Prescriber in Australia. The aim is to provide you with the skills to evaluate cannabinoid-based medicines and its role in the treatment of patients suffering certain mental health disorders, addiction, and chronic pain. You will put theory to practice by developing a treatment plan with group activities facilitated by our trained educators and learn about dosing and appropriate strategies to manage patients.

Relevance to General Practice

Cannabinoid-based medicines are emerging as a significant therapeutic medicine in the treatment of many medical conditions, there is increased interest among patients and there is a growing need for professionally developed training that equips medical doctors with practical skills to appropriately manage patient demand, enquires and uphold the highest standard of care during treatment. Since 2016, Australia has seen significant changes in regulations that has substantially increased the number of patients being prescribed cannabinoid-based medicines to treat a variety of medical conditions. The changing legal sphere and increasing public demand add new challenges for GPs who need to be aware of the legislative requirements and access schemes in Australia. Therefore, it is vital GPs are formally educated and trained to ensure standards of care are upheld and patients are appropriately assessed when considering cannabinoid-based treatment.
