About the workshop

This masterclass is intended for medical practitioners with some experience in prescribing cannabinoid-based medicines through the Special Access Scheme, seeking to gain more knowledge in the requirements of becoming an Authorised Prescriber in Australia. The aim is to provide you with the skills to evaluate cannabinoid-based medicines and its role in the treatment of patients suffering certain mental health disorders, addiction, and chronic pain. You will put theory to practice by developing a treatment plan with group activities facilitated by our trained educators and learn about dosing and appropriate strategies to manage patients.

After this workshop, you will be able to:

Evaluate the aetiology of chronic pain and mental health disorders, currently used treatment, and their limitations

Analyse the role of neuroinflammation and dysregulation of endocannabinoid system in the aetiology of chronic pain and mental health disorders

Explore the treatment pathways and apply to become an Authorised Medicinal Cannabis Prescriber in Australia

Create a treatment plan and identify the role of Medicinal Cannabis in the treatment of these conditions

The “Mental Health and Chronic Pain Medicinal Cannabis Masterclass” activity has been accredited (Activity no: 246374) by the The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) for the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program in the 2020-22 triennium. Fellow GP members of the RACGP are eligible to claim 40 CPD Accredited points. It is a requirement of the RACGP that members who wish to claim these points provide their RACGP number when applying for this course. Other health professionals may also apply for self-directed CPD point for their particular profession.

About the Educator

Dr. Teresa Towpik has been a General Practitioner in Australia since 1993 and an advocate of medicinal cannabis since the law was amended and cannabis was legalized for medicinal use. In 2016 she founded Medihuanna with the goal to educate medical practitioners to safely treat patients with medicinal cannabis. Since then, she has been studying the therapeutic properties of cannabis, how it works, and the potential applications in General Practice, especially in the management of chronic debilitating pain.

About the Educator

Dr Rex Kwan is a General Practitioner with specialty interests in Medicinal Cannabis and is an Authorised Prescriber of multiple cannabinoid products. He completed his undergraduate studies in science (medical microbiology & immunology) at UNSW, followed by medical school at the UNDA, and hospital training in the Blacktown Hospital network, before finally completing his GP speciality training in 2017. Dr Kwan has an avid focus for campaigning for the legalisation and safety of medicinal cannabis, and is part of an ongoing group within the AMCA (Australian Medicinal Cannabis Clinicians) dedicated to the safety of this speciality. Dr Kwan is currently the Director of Medical Services for Midispensary Clinics.
