Professor Nicholas Lintzeris

Professor Nicholas Lintzeris is a Conjoint Professor in Addiction Medicine at University of Sydney, and Director of Drug and Alcohol Services at South East Sydney Local Health District in NSW. He has led a number of NHMRC funded clinical trials of medicinal cannabis in the treatment of cannabis use disorder, and is the lead researcher of the Cannabis As Medicine Surveys (2016, 2018, 2020) examining consumer experiences of medical cannabis in Australia. He prescribes medicinal cannabis in private practice in Sydney.

This presentation will examine cannabis use disorder and medicinal cannabis – from two perspectives:

  • the development, prevention and management of cannabis use disorder in patients prescribed THC-based medicines for other conditions (e.g. pain). It is estimated that up to 15-20% of long term patients prescribed a THC based medicine may develop cannabis use disorder, and this is an important issue for health providers and consumers to address.
  • the evidence for medicinal cannabis in the treatment of (primary) cannabis use disorder, and its application in contemporary Australian clinical settings. Cannabis use disorder (CUD) is the most common substance use disorder next to alcohol and tobacco, yet we have no licensed medication to manage CUD, and counselling approaches are effective for only a minority of patients. This presentation will examine the role of medicinal cannabis for this indication.
