Trauma and the Endocannabinoid System: Modulating and Regulating Fear Responses

Examine how psychological trauma reshapes fear processing and the endocannabinoid system's role as a neuromodulatory buffer for stress and emotional regulation. Covers ECS dysregulation, cannabinoid-based therapies, and integration with trauma-informed psychotherapy.

About the webinar

Psychological trauma profoundly alters brain function, driving persistent changes in fear processing, emotional regulation, and stress responsiveness. These neurobiological disruptions underpin a wide spectrum of mental health conditions, including PTSD, anxiety disorders, and depression, presenting significant challenges for clinicians in achieving sustained therapeutic outcomes.

This webinar explores the neurophysiology of trauma, with a focus on how maladaptive fear responses develop and persist within key brain regions such as the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex. Central to this discussion is the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a critical neuromodulatory network that acts as a regulatory “buffer,” maintaining homeostasis in response to stress.

Participants will examine how the ECS functions as a retrograde signalling system, dynamically modulating neurotransmitter release to influence fear expression and facilitate fear extinction. Drawing on emerging evidence, the session will explore how dysregulation of the ECS may contribute to trauma-related psychopathology and how targeted therapeutic strategies, including cannabinoids, may support restoration of emotional balance.

Importantly, this webinar emphasises that pharmacological approaches alone are insufficient. It will highlight the essential role of psychotherapy, including trauma-informed care models, in promoting long-term recovery. Clinicians will gain insight into how to integrate cannabinoid-based therapies and other pharmacological interventions within a multimodal treatment framework, supporting improved patient outcomes and functional recovery.

This session is designed for healthcare professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of trauma biology and apply evidence-informed, patient-centred approaches in clinical practice.

Learning Outcomes

Describe the neurobiological mechanisms of psychological trauma, including alterations in fear processing, stress response systems, and key brain regions involved in trauma-related disorders.
Explain the role of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) as a retrograde neuromodulator in regulating emotional responses, fear expression, and fear extinction.
Evaluate current evidence on ECS dysregulation in trauma-related conditions, and assess the potential role of cannabinoid-based and other pharmacological therapies in clinical management.
Apply a multimodal, trauma-informed treatment approach, integrating psychotherapy with pharmacological interventions to optimise patient outcomes in individuals experiencing trauma-related mental health conditions.

About the speaker

Dr Jamie Rickcord is medical psychotherapist with expertise in treating trauma related and treatment resistant mental health conditions. Dr Jamie also holds an academic post at The University of Sydney in the Faculty of Medicine and Health, Master of Medicine (Psychotherapy) Program as a lecturer and clinical supervisor and is also a faculty member of the Westmead Program for Complex Traumatic Disorders. Professionally Dr Jamie is clinical member of the Australia and New Zealand Association of Psychotherapy (ANZAP).

Dr Jamie practices a contemporary psychotherapy called the Conversational Model. Rooted in humanistic, relational, and psychodynamic traditions the model emphasises the importance of dialogue, mutual understanding, and the therapeutic relationship in facilitating psychological healing with a strong focus on how the relationship between therapist and patient promotes insight, emotional processing, and change. Dr Jamie is also one of Australia's most experienced prescribers and educator of cannabinoid pharmacology and physiology.
