Overprescribing Cannabis: Drug Interactions, Dosing Limits, and Clinical Guidance

Practical strategies for safe and effective medicinal cannabis prescribing, with a focus on avoiding overuse, managing interactions, and ensuring TGA compliance.
Online Workshop

About the workshop

As medicinal cannabis becomes a more common therapeutic tool, the risk of overprescribing is an increasing concern—particularly in patients with complex conditions or concurrent medications. This practical, clinician-focused workshop explores how to safely prescribe cannabis by understanding drug–cannabinoid interactions, setting clear dosing limits, and applying current best practices. Through clinical case studies and interactive discussions, participants will explore how to balance therapeutic benefit with safety—particularly in patients with complex conditions or polypharmacy risks. The session will also cover signs of cannabis overuse, risk of dependence, and how to prescribe within TGA-compliant limits. Whether you’re new to prescribing or looking to refine your approach, this workshop offers clear, actionable guidance for safe and effective cannabis-based treatment in modern medical practice.

After this workshop, you will be able to:

Identify the clinical risks of overprescribing medicinal cannabis and how to mitigate them in daily practice.

Evaluate key drug–cannabinoid interactions that may increase adverse effects or reduce efficacy.

Apply safe dosing strategies for THC and CBD, including titration, maximum limits, and patient monitoring.

Identify signs of cannabis overuse or dependence and implement patient-centred harm reduction strategies.
