About the workshop

This introductory workshop equips medical doctors with necessary skills to prescribe and treat patients with medicinal cannabis in Australia. Developed using the latest evidence, combined with Dr Towpik’s experience and patient case studies from her clinical practice. This activity provides learners with the theory, combined with practical exercises that encourage active learning by assessing patient case studies and developing an appropriate treatment plan.

During the workshop, course participants will develop a good understanding of the therapeutic properties of medicinal cannabis, dosing strategies, appropriate patient care and potential applications in chronic pain management, palliative care, multiple sclerosis, CINV, and epilepsy.

On completion of this workshop, course participants will have a better understanding of the prescribing process in Australia and will be equipped with the necessary skills to confidently assess, advise, prescribe and treat patients with medicinal cannabis.

After this workshop, you will be able to:

Discuss the therapeutic properties of medicinal cannabis

Identify appropriate strategies of patient management and current legislation including prescribing, and patient access pathways

Discuss treatment considerations, dosing and titration to ensure patient safety during cannabis treatment

Differentiate between adverse and therapeutic effects of medicinal cannabis

Evaluate the clinical applications of medicinal cannabis in General Practice

The “Practical Skills in Prescribing Medicinal Cannabis” activity has been accredited (Activity no: 195701) by the The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) for the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program in the 2020-22 triennium. Fellow GP members of the RACGP are eligible to claim 40 CPD Accredited points. It is a requirement of the RACGP that members who wish to claim these points provide their RACGP number when applying for this course. Other health professionals may also apply for self-directed CPD point for their particular profession.

About the Educator

Dr. Teresa Towpik has been a General Practitioner in Australia since 1993 and an advocate of medicinal cannabis since the law was amended and cannabis was legalized for medicinal use. In 2016 she founded Medihuanna with the goal to educate medical practitioners to safely treat patients with medicinal cannabis. Since then, she has been studying the therapeutic properties of cannabis, how it works, and the potential applications in General Practice, especially in the management of chronic debilitating pain.

About the Educator

Dr Imran Khan completed his medical training at The Sheffield School of Medicine (UK) in 2001. He has held clinical leadership roles in the UK, Australia & Qatar and is currently serving as the Medical Director of Warringah Medical Centre (NSW). He is a Family Medical Practitioner and a founding board member of the ANZCCP. He is an advocate for the therapeutic use of medicinal cannabis and is an ‘Authorised Prescriber’ (approved by the TGA) and educator in the field.
